Trunk Bay, St. John: Exploring One of the Most Beautiful Beaches in the U.S. Virgin Islands

White sand curves around brilliant turquoise water while green hills rise behind the shoreline. At Trunk Bay on St. John, the scenery feels like the Caribbean postcard you have seen a hundred times, except this time you get to step into it.
Located within Virgin Islands National Park in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Trunk Bay combines a beautiful beach with easy access to snorkeling and useful visitor amenities.
Whether you come to swim, explore underwater, or simply enjoy the view, it is an easy place to spend several hours.
Start With the Famous White-Sand Beach
Trunk Bay's beach stretches for about 0.3 miles, giving you plenty of shoreline for a walk before settling down.
The combination of powdery white sand, clear blue-green water, and thick tropical vegetation makes the setting especially photogenic. The beach also has a gentle slope, along with accessible paths and beach ramps.
Arrive earlier in the day if you want more time to find your preferred spot. Parking around Virgin Islands National Park is limited, and the small lot at Trunk Bay can fill quickly.
Follow the Underwater Snorkel Trail

Trunk Bay offers something you will not find at every Caribbean beach.
Just offshore is the Trunk Bay Underwater Snorkel Trail. The National Park Service describes it as a beginner-friendly place to learn about marine life, with underwater plaques positioned along the route.
The trail follows the western side of Trunk Bay Cay before turning back toward the beach. Along the way, you can see coral and colorful fish beneath the surface.
Water conditions can change, particularly farther from shore, so choose an experience appropriate for your swimming ability and pay attention to current conditions.
Enjoy an Easy Beach Day

You do not need to bring everything with you to enjoy Trunk Bay.
Facilities include restrooms, showers, foot rinses, food and beverage concessions, and snorkel and chair rentals. These amenities make the beach especially convenient if you are planning to stay for much of the day.
There is currently a $5 day-use amenity fee for visitors age 16 and older. Virgin Islands National Park itself does not charge a general entrance fee.
Explore More of St. John

Trunk Bay may be the main event, but it does not have to be your only stop.
More than 40 percent of Virgin Islands National Park is underwater, while St. John also offers hiking trails, other beaches, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove shorelines.
Cruz Bay is roughly a 12-minute drive or taxi ride from Trunk Bay. If you are arriving from St. Thomas, ferries provide access to St. John before you continue toward the beach.
Give Trunk Bay More Than a Quick Stop
It is tempting to visit Trunk Bay simply to take a few photos of that famous view.
Give yourself more time.
Walk the sand. Swim in the turquoise water. Follow the snorkeling trail if conditions are right. Then find a comfortable spot and enjoy the green hills surrounding the bay.
Trunk Bay may be famous for its beauty, but spending an unhurried day there is what makes the scenery memorable.
